Illusions and magic have fascinated people since ancient times. Today 31 January we celebrate International Illusionist Day.
Did you know that:
- the first records of illusionists appeared in ancient Egypt,
- the first known trick was the trick with 3 balls and cups,
- in the Middle Ages illusionists were accused of being in touch with supernatural forces?
There are many illusionist tricks. These include cutting a person in half, a severed foot or hand, a levitating woman, pulling a rabbit out of a cylinder, changing the colour of a tissue, a disappearing coin, optical illusions. Sometimes we know how these things are possible, but many illusions are difficult to explain.
Why? The art of illusion relies on mystery and the element of surprise and the world of magicians is very careful not to reveal its secrets.
At the WOMAI Center of Science and Senses, we love illusions. We are happy to show them in the exhibition "Into the Light" and also explain their mechanism. Anyone interested in finding out more about the secrets of illusionists is warmly invited.
