Light is present in our everyday life and science in the 21st century. It has made possible revolutionary discoveries in medicine, the development of international communication via the Internet, and the search for solutions to many of the economic, social and cultural problems of global society.

This annual celebration takes place on 16 May, the anniversary of the first successful laser operation in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. It was established by UNESCO in 2017.
